POS transactions hit SAR 9.05 bln in week ending Dec. 18: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell 10% to SAR 9.05 billion in the week ending Dec. 18, from SAR 10.01 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 113.1 million transactions were processed in the week ending Dec. 18.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week ending Dec. 18, except for hotels’ sector, which rose by 2%. 

 

Education sector led the declines by 36%, followed by telecommunications and recreation and culture sectors falling by 22% and 17%, respectively. 

 

Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.30 billion, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.28 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.98 billion, representing 33% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.43 billion.
