OPEC chose Kuwaiti oil executive Haitham Al-Ghais to become the organization’s next Secretary General, Reuters reported, citing well-informed sources.

Al-Ghais was Kuwait's governor at OPEC during the period 2017-2021, and he headed the technical committee charged with monitoring output and market conditions five years ago.

OPEC's Secretary-General Mohammad Barkindo will step down from his position in August, after he served for two terms, starting from 2016.
