A POS machine
The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 10.67 billion in the week ended March 26, from SAR 10.74 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that 128.25 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week, led by hotels sector, which fell by 25%. It was followed by clothing & footwear and restaurants & cafes sectors, declining of 13% and 10%, respectively.
On the other hand, education sector saw a 167% increase in POS transactions.
Meanwhile, POS deals for food & beverages, telecommunications and health sectors rose by 14%, 4% and 0.2%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on the food & beverage sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.76 billion, representing 17% of total sales, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.41 billion accounting for 13% of total sales.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value, with nearly SAR 3.38 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.69 billion.
