POS weekly transactions hit SAR 10 bln: SAMA

POS device


The point-of-sale (POS) transactions amounted to SAR 10 billion in the week ending April 16, compared to SAR 9.64 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that a total of 114.4 million transactions were processed last week. 

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using their ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Sectors witnessed showed mixed performance. Jewellery sector topped risers, leaping 25%, followed by clothes & footwear (21%) and hotels (19%).

 

On the other hand, education sector led decliners, dropping 24%, followed by electronics & electric appliances (7%).

 

Consumer spending was focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.43 billion, representing 14% of POS transactions. It was followed by miscellaneous goods & services sector with SAR 1.01 billion, or 10% of total spending.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.01 billion, representing 30% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.64 billion.
