US crude oil inventories declined in the week ended Dec. 16, contrary to the expectations of an increase. Gasoline inventories, however, edged up during the same period.
Crude oil shed 5.9 million barrels last week, compared to expectations of an increase of 2.5 million barrels, data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed.
US gasoline inventories rose 2.5 million barrels during the same week, while distillate stocks gained 200,000 barrels.
