Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) announced today, Jan. 10, the groundbreaking of the development and operation projects of two container terminals at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam (Dammam Port).

The investment value of the projects, awarded to Saudi Global Ports Co. (SGP), exceeded SAR 7 billion, under the build–operate–transfer (BOT) model, the authority said in a statement.

The scope of work includes the development of the berths and their infrastructure as well as the facilities of the first container terminal. It will also cover the expansion of berths and the development of the container yard in the second container terminal, in order to accommodate and handle mega vessels.

This is in addition to the establishment of a three-acre sandbox for experimenting modern equipment and technologies, using advanced solutions, which will enhance the port’s future readiness and operational efficiency.

Outsourcing projects at Dammam Port contributes to increasing the port’s terminal capacity by more than 120% to accommodate 7.5 million containers, providing more than 4,000 jobs. This supports MAWANI's efforts to reinforce the port-logistics sector and boost the supply chain reliability. This is along with improving the flow of national imports and exports, while raising the Kingdom's ranking on international indices, the statement added.

MAWANI also indicated that it is working on attracting more investment opportunities as part of its development plan. This is by launching more than 160 projects over the coming years, with an estimated budget exceeding SAR 4 billion, including 11 leading projects aimed at advancing Saudi ports’ position among its global peers.
