Applications for US unemployment insurance unexpected dropped, despite the wave of worker layoffs seen in technology sector.
Initial unemployment claims decreased by 6,000 to 186,000 in the week ended Jan. 21, its lowest level since April. compared to the unadjusted 192,000 last week, Labor Department data showed today, Jan. 26. The median estimate in a survey of economists called for 205,000 new applications.
The four-week moving average, which smooths out volatility from week to week, decreased by 6,250 to 197,500, from 206,750 in the previous week.
