US crude oil inventories declined in the week ended Aug. 25 Gasoline inventories also decreased, while distillate stocks rose during the same period.
Crude oil fell 10.6 million barrels last week, to reach 422.9 million barrels, thus extending the downturn to the third successive week, compared to expectations of a decline by 5.2 million barrels, data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed.
US gasoline inventories dropped by 200,000 barrels to 217.4 million barrels during the same week; down by 5% compared to a five-year average. Meanwhile, Distillate stocks increased by 1.2 million barrels to 117.9 million barrels; however, they are down 15% compared to the five-year average.
