Saudi Arabia attains membership of IMO for 2024-25

Saudi Arabia won the membership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for 2024-25, after garnering 143 votes from member states during the elections held in London, the state-run SPA reported.

The International Maritime Organization, a specialised agency of the United Nations, sets international standards to ensure the safety and security of maritime transportations and seeks to reduce pollution from ships.

The Transport General Authority (TGA) said that this win will allow the Kingdom to activate the IMO’s initiatives and contribute to developing the international laws and rules related to global trade and maritime transportation.

Saudi Arabia is well-positioned in the maritime transportation sector, as it fleet ranks first regionally.

Saudi Arabia's national transport and logistics strategy also adopted many ambitious goals that helped the maritime sector reach advanced ranks globally. It targets the handling of 40 million TEUs annually by 2030.
