Saudi Power Procurement Co. (SPPC), the principal buyer, tendered four projects to generate electricity under the independent power plant (IPP) projects, with a total capacity of 7,200 megawatts (MW).

These projects are located at Rumah 1 and Rumah 2 stations in the central region, and the Nairiyah 1 and Nairiyah 2 stations in the Eastern Province, with a production capacity of 1,800 MW each. The stations will work with natural gas combined cycle technology (NGCC), with provision for carbon capture unit readiness, state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, citing a company statement.

The projects align with the Saudi Green Initiative and the Kingdom's ambition to reach net zero emissions through a circular carbon economy strategy by 2060 or earlier when the necessary technologies are mature and available.

The projects are an extension of the Ministry of Energy’s efforts to achieve Vision 2030 goals, which will enhance electricity generation efficiency, reduce costs by diversifying energy sources, transition away from liquid fuels and achieve a balanced energy mix equally through renewable energy and gas.
