ACWA Power consortium signs wind farm deal with Egypt gov’t

The Egyptian government signed a wind energy deal of up to $1.5bn (SAR 5.6 billion) with an ACWA Power-led consortium.

 

Thomas Brostrom, ACWA Power’s Chief Investment Officer (CIO), said that the project will be designed to use the latest wind turbine technologies, with a height of around 220 meters, the highest in the Gulf of Suez region.

 

Mohamed Shaker, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said that the project is the largest of its kind in the Middle East. It is also one of the largest onshore wind energy projects worldwide.

 

The project will contribute to reducing 2.4 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, saving about 840,000 tons of fuel annually. The project will help provide electricity to about one million housing units,
