In October 2023, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched the general master plan for the new Abha International Airport, Argaam earlier reported.
Matarat and NPC announced earlier this month the start of inviting bids from the private sector for the operation of Abha International Airport project. The project will feature a new travel terminal located in the eastern space of the current terminal and will be ready by 2028, which will be built in two to three phases with a total area estimated at 69,400 square meters, and is expected to be expanded to reach 73,200 square meters in the second phase.
The airport targets nearly 8 million and over 13 million passengers by 2030 and 2054, respectively.
The project also includes the construction of aircraft parking lots to serve the new terminal, in addition to a quick exit path from the current runway during the middle of the period 2030-2040. This is in addition to other facilities, such as roads leading to the new travel terminal, new parking lots, and the expansion of supporting facilities such as a power generation plant, and a new wastewater treatment plant.
