Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) announced the completion and operation of the new strategic electrical interconnection project between the Central and Southern regions.

The project passes through the main substations at Al-Kharj, Al-Aflaj, Wadi Al-Dawasir, and Bisha.

In a statement, the utility said the project is worth nearly SAR 1 billion and spans over 830 km. It also includes the construction of 2,100 energy towers and the installation of reactors and transformers with a capacity exceeding 2,000 megavolt-ampere (MVA). This is in addition to the extension of a fiber optic network approximately 830 km long.

The project allows electrical interconnection between the two regions, which contributes to boosting the reliability of service and efficiency of the electrical system. It also enhances the electrical system capabilities and facilitates the optimal exploitation of electricity production resources in the Kingdom, which bolsters the Kingdom’s position as a leading economic power.

This project is compatible with SEC's strategy and the energy system aimed at achieving the sustainability and efficiency of electricity services through building and strengthening electrical interconnection lines between regions.

The company, through the implementation of this project, aims to support the localization and local content to ensure a sustainable national supply chain.
