Saudi ports reported a 15.51% drop in cargo throughput tonnage to 594,970 tons in June, compared to 704,200 tons in the same period a year ago.
In a statement, the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) said that outbound containers rose 7.78% to 228,030 in June, from 211,570 in the prior-year period. The number of inbound containers also increased 9.85% to 245,570 last month, compared to 223,550 in June 2023.
The general cargo reached 584,900 tons in June, while dry and liquid bulk cargo reached 4.97 million and 15.55 million tons, respectively. Ports received 1.82 million livestock heads for the same month, compared to 1.99 million in the same month of 2023.
Handled containers grew 9.16% year-on-year (YoY) to 27.64 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in May, while transshipment containers were down 54.89% YoY to 121,370 during the same month, from 269,080 TEUs in June 2023.
The maritime traffic saw a decline of 3.41% YoY to 962 ships in June. Meanwhile, the number of passengers fell 18.66% to 55,300 last month, compared to 67,970 last year. The number of cars increased by 33.93% YoY to 101,150 for the same month.
