KSA approves rules on registering Makkah, Madinah as trademarks

The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property approved rules on registering the trademarks that include the names Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Madinah Al-Munawwarah, Al-Haramain Al-Shareefain, Al-Haramain, Al-Haram, or similar names, whether in Arabic or any other language.

Under the rules, the trademark should be related to a major real estate or service project in the two regions, Umm Al-Qura newspaper reported.

The abovementioned names should only be part of the trademark but not its primary focus.

The usage of the abovementioned namesshould not bring about confusion in the trademark as regards the source or origin of goods or services.
