Saudi-Egypt electricity interconnection project is 60% completed so far, Bloomberg Asharq reported, citing an Egyptian government official.
The first phase, with a production capacity of 1.5 GW, is set to commence operations by July 2025 at a total cost of $1.8 billion. The project’s maximum capacity of around 3 GW is expected to be reached by early 2026.
The project is currently in the final stages of laying the large pipes through which eight underwater cables will pass between Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the report said.
These cables have a total length of about 22 kilometers beneath the coral reefs in the Red Sea area of the Gulf of Aqaba. This will follow with the laying of the submarine cables between both countries.
