The Saudi-Egypt electricity interconnection's first phase is being sought to commence operations by May or June 2025 at the latest, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said during the weekly Cabinet press conference.
He pointed out that the recent Saudi-Egyptian meeting focused on following up on new and renewable energy projects being jointly implemented, particularly the Saudi-Egypt power grid linkage.

Madbouly noted that 1,500 megawatts (MWs) of electricity will be exchanged in the first phase of the Saudi-Egypt electricity interconnection project, benefiting both countries since peak hours differ. Egypt can receive electricity from Saudi Arabia during its peak, and vice versa.
He also highlighted that the 3,000-MW power linkage will surpass the GCC’s total regional energy capacity, underscoring the significance of the project and the bilateral efforts made to bring it to life.
