The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member states are reportedly set to re-elect Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais for a second three-year term, according to sources cited by Reuters.

The re-election is expected to be confirmed during a virtual meeting on Dec. 10, focusing solely on administrative matters, with no discussions on production plans.

Al Ghais took over as OPEC Secretary-General in January 2022, succeeding the late Nigerian Secretary-General Mohammed Barkindo. Since then, he has played a key role in steering the organization's efforts to stabilize the global oil market.

On Dec. 5, the OPEC+ alliance agreed to postpone plans to increase oil production until April 2025, marking the third postponement of this initiative. The gradual easing of the 2.2 million barrels per day production cuts is scheduled to begin in April and extend through September 2026.
