Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals Co. to localize gene therapy industry in the Kingdom.

In a post on social messaging platform X, the ministry said that the agreement will transfer knowledge, drive local biotech research, and attract SAR 1 billion in investments over five years, establishing the Kingdom as a regional hub for cell and gene therapy.

The MoU focuses on expanding access to Vertex’s therapies, enhancing research and expertise, and building manufacturing capacity. It also aims to train Saudi healthcare professionals to become global leaders in the field.

The MoU, signed in collaboration with the Ministries of Investment and Health, aligns with the Kingdom’s vision to become a leading global biotech hub by 2040.
