The number of registered users on the freelance platform exceeded 2.25 million as of September 2024, according to a report by Future Work Co., a government entity under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD), Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
Commerce and retail accounted for 38% of total freelance activities, followed by the industrial sector at 13% and business services at 11%.
This highlights the freelance market's dynamic role in catering to various industries across Saudi Arabia.
The report showed that bachelor's degree holders comprised 62% of freelancers, with high school graduates or below at 31%, and advanced degree holders at 7%.
These figures demonstrate the sector’s ability to include diverse educational backgrounds.
Riyadh led in freelance activity with 27%, followed by Makkah at 22% and the Eastern Province at 14%. The most active age group was 25 to 34 years, reflecting increased interest among younger individuals.
Notably, 3.2 million women expressed interest in joining the freelance market.
Freelancing contributed SAR 72.5 billion to Saudi Arabia’s Gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023, accounting for 2% of the total GDP.
This underscores the sector’s vital role in boosting the economy and diversifying income sources.
