The number of jobless claims in the US fell unexpectedly in the week ending Dec. 21, reflecting ongoing strength in the labor market of the world’s largest economy.
Data from the US Department of Labor showed initial jobless claims decreased by 1,000 to 219,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Economists had forecast an increase to 223,000, compared to the prior week’s unrevised level of 220,000.
The four-week moving average of jobless claims, a steadier indicator of labor market trends, rose by 1,000 to 226,500.
