Trump calls to open up North Sea, get rid of windmills

Donald Trump urged opening up the North Sea and getting rid of windmills, Reuters reported, citing the US President-elect's post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday.

This came in response to a news report about Apache, a unit of the US oil and gas company APA Corporation, planning to wind down its operations in the North Sea by 2029.

The company expects production in the region to decline by 20% year-on-year in 2025.

In October 2024, the UK government announced its plan to increase the windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas producers to 38% from 35% and extend the tax for an additional year.

The UK aims to use the tax revenues to fund renewable energy projects, as the government seeks to reduce emissions from the domestic energy sector by the end of the current decade.
