Republican Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th US President.

Trump is the second US President elected to two non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland.

In his inauguration address, Trump vowed that “the golden age of America begins right now.”

“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth — inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world,” Trump said.

“Our power will stop all wars and bring a new spirit of unity to a world that has been angry, violent and totally unpredictable,” he said.

“We will not be intimidated. We will not be broken and we will not fail. From this day on, the United States of America will be a free, sovereign and independent nation,” Trump said.

Trump said his “life was saved” by the grace of God to make America great again, in reference to the assassination attempt made on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania while he was on the campaign trail.

It is expected that Trump will issue a large number of executive orders in his first day in the White House, including that aimed at backtracking on some of Joe Biden’s policies.

Trump also tackled in his speech the plans to boost energy production and export, as well as the issue of immigration and imposing emergency at the southern borders. He touched upon the Panama Canal, saying, “And above all, China is operating the Panama Canal and we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back.
