President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), dealing a major blow to global health funding.
The WHO, based in Geneva, depends heavily on US contributions, which make up around one-fifth of its annual budget.
Trump criticized the organization for failing to act independently of undue political influence from its member states and for imposing disproportionately high financial demands on the US compared to countries like China.
"World Health ripped us off; everybody rips off the United States. It's not going to happen anymore," Trump declared after signing the executive order.
During his first term, Trump had attempted to withdraw from the WHO, accusing it of bias toward the Chinese government during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
