Donald Trump, US President
US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico hours after his inauguration, signaling his intense focus on trade.
Trump is considering imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as they are allowing a large number of people to cross the border, calling “Canada as a very bad aggressor”. The anticipated date for the new tariffs is Feb. 1.
Although it was known that Trump planned to impose sweeping tariffs on trading partners, the timing and scope were ambiguous.
The plans threaten a trade war among North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signatories, affecting relations with two key energy and electric vehicle (EV) import partners.
