US President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump stated that Americans might feel some pain from the trade war sparked after tariffs were imposed on Canada, Mexico, and China.
"Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (or maybe not!), but we will make America great again, and that is worth the price that must be paid,” he wrote in a social media post.
Trump also attacked Canada, which responded with retaliatory measures, saying: "We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited energy, and we should make our own cars."
He claimed that without Canada’s trade surplus with the US, Canada would cease to exist as a viable country.
He added: "Therefore, Canada should become our beloved 51st state, benefiting from much lower taxes, significantly better military protection for the people of Canada, and no tariffs."
These statements came after the tariffs signed by the president on Saturday at his resort in Florida caused a mix of panic, anger, and uncertainty among his country's key trade partners.
On Sunday, he also threatened to impose higher tariffs on other countries, telling reporters that this would certainly happen with the European Union and possibly with the United Kingdom.
