Japan’s Softbank recorded an unexpected quarterly loss, and less-than-expected revenues from lower investment holdings of Vision Fund.
The company, based in Tokyo, pledged to invest $15 billion in the “Stargate” project, which it owns jointly with OpenAI and Oracle. The project will build the capacity of the intelligence data center in the United States, supported by President Donald Trump.
The broader Vision Fund segment incurred a loss of JPY 309.93 billion for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2024, compared to a profit of JPY 422.74 billion in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Vision Fund 1 recorded a total profit of $21.6 billion since its inception in 2017, while Vision Fund 2, which covers a wide range of startups, reported a loss of $22.2 billion since 2019.
