China now faces tariffs of up to 245% on import of goods into the US "as a result of its retaliatory actions", the White House said as the trade war between the two countries appears to run further.
According to a statement published by the White House on April 15, the tariffs include a reciprocal duty of 125%, in addition to a 20% levy related to fentanyl trafficking.
Meanwhile, a White House official told Newsweek that this represents the maximum potential tariff rate that may be imposed on certain Chinese products.
For example, the U.S. already imposes a 100% tariff on electric vehicles (EVs) since the term of former President Joe Biden. If the new tariffs are implemented, EVs would then be subject to a total tariff of 245%.
Until now tit-for-tat tariff exchanges had seen the US levy a 145% tax on Chinese imports and China slap a 125% duty on US goods.
