Amin Nasser has been named acting chief executive officer at Saudi Aramco, following former chief Khalid Al-Falih’s appointment to the role of chairman and health minister, the state news agency announced on Friday.

Nasser has served at the world’s largest energy company for 33 years and previously held the role of vice president of upstream operations, exploration, and production since 2008.

He began his career at Aramco working as an engineer in its oil-production unit, and later went on to other positions in engineering, drilling and reservoir management. In 1998, he headed up the Ras Tanura producing department and also managed the Northern Area producing and engineering department, as well as the Safaniya onshore and offshore producing departments.

He became a senior petroleum engineer in 2004 and a year later rose through the ranks to be named executive director of petroleum engineering. In 2006, he assumed the role of vice president of petroleum engineering and development.

The new chief executive has been heavily involved in outreach and training aimed at developing future leaders within the company. He also helped develop Aramco’s international business program in 2000, as well as its senior executive program at the New York-based Columbia University in 2002.

Nasser is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and was named a senior member of SPE’s Advisory Board in 2008.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
