Saudi Arabia's General Civil Aviation Authority (GACA) plans to privatize management and operations at eight local airports, Alaa Samman, the authority’s director of business development told the kingdom-based Okaz newspaper.
The move aims to expand and improve services to passengers, as well as to capitalize on private sector financing, Samman said.
He added that several of the kingdom’s airports are currently privately run including Rabigh Airport, Prince Abdul Mohsen Airport in Yanbu, King Abdullah International Airport in Jizan, Prince Sultan Airport in Tabuk, and Qassim-based Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Regional Airport.
In 2012, GACA had planned to establish a holding company for civil aviation to privatize operations in order to encourage airports in the kingdom to become more globally competitive.
The privatization plans this time around come after it received several complaints about the kingdom’s airports.
