Construction work has begun on the expansion of Saudi Aramco’s Khurais oil field, after the state-owned oil giant asked contractors to speed up work on the $3 billion project, Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) reported, citing unnamed industry sources.
Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem S.p.A, which handled engineering work for the project, has started construction on the field’s central processing facility, the sources said.
Saipem is tasked with boosting daily production capacity at the Khurais Central Processing Facility by 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.5 million barrels per day (mbd).
Last November, MEED reported that Saudi Aramco had revived plans for the Khurais expansion after they were put on hold due to cost-related concerns.
