Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) plans to award a BOT (build-operate-transfer) contract for Taif International Airport in 2017, state-owned Saudi Press Agency (SPA), reported citing an aviation official.
The new airport is planned to have an initial capacity of 5 million passengers a year, which could be increased to 8 million and will be opened in 2020, assistant chairman of GACA, Tareq alAbdel Jabbar was quoted as saying.
The airport, northeast of Taif, will serve visitors for the pilgrimage to Makkah, which is about 120 kilometers away from the airport site.
The existing airport at Taif serves domestic flights.
