20 everyday products you probably didn’t know were Petroleum-based

01/07/2017 Argaam

Most people only think of transportation or energy when oil is mentioned, but there are literally thousands of products that we use in our everyday lives that are made from crude oil.

One barrel of crude oil (42 gallons) can produce about 20 gallons of gasoline, four gallons of airplane fuel, and 18 gallons that can be used in manufacturing other products that are listed below.

For example, in 1872 young chemist Robert Chesebrough discovered that by distilling lighter, thinner oil, he could create petroleum jelly, or Vaseline.

The durable care tires that we use today are also another product that was discovered in 1910 by B.F. Goodrich. He found out how to make more durable tires by adding carbon, which is made from petroleum, to the rubber. Tires were white (like latex) until he made that discovery.

Plastic is also another product derived from crude oil.

The Innovative Wealth Website has published a list of 144 products made from oil. Argaam has compiled a brief list of the top 20 products.
