Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) plans to tender the new Al Qunfudhah airport before the end of this year, Meed reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
GACA will offer the project through an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract instead of a public-private partnership (PPP), the report said.
The project is expected to be completed by 2020.
GACA also plans to build a new airport in Jubail city, sources said.
GACA had received the allocated land for building Al Qunfudhah Airport last December.
Initial studies showed that Al Qunfudhah airport needs a 21 square kilometers land, with a 3,000-meter runway to allow small and medium airplanes to operate.
