The Saudi cabinet has approved exempting contractors that are working on government projects awarded ahead of the cabinet decision issued in December 2016 from paying expat fees, Al-Watan newspaper reported Sunday.
A committee will be set up to develop a compensation mechanism for construction firms. However, the decision will not apply to ongoing public projects and developments scheduled for completion beyond 2018.
The decision came after the Council of Saudi Chambers had addressed the Council for Economic and Development Affairs to reconsider expat fees, given the expected negative impact on contractors in terms of liquidity and higher costs.
