Abu Dhabi Ports officially began operations at the newly established Fujairah Terminals on Saturday, the port operator said on its Twitter account.
Abu Dhabi Ports signed a 35-year concession agreement in June with the Port of Fujairah to establish Fujairah Terminals, a new operational arm wholly owned by Abu Dhabi Ports.
Under the deal, Abu Dhabi Ports will develop port infrastructure and manage operations, in addition to investing AED 1 billion in infrastructure and equipment.
Since the concession agreement was signed, Fujairah Terminals has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Perma Pipe Middle East to receive logistics support from the terminal, Abu Dhabi Ports said.
In the past decade, Fujairah Port has tripled its berths to nine and increased shipping traffic more than eight-fold, with the port handling more than 2,200 vessels last year, according to earlier news reports.
Onshore storage capacity has also increased in the past two decades to 10 million cubic tonnes, and Abu Dhabi Ports plans to raise that to 14 million cubic tonnes by 2020.
