Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) implemented SAR 61 billion worth of projects in Makkah since 2012, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
The current backlog is valued at over SAR 24 billion.
The state-run utility is studying three photovoltaic power plants in Jeddah, Rabigh and Shuaiba at an estimated cost of SAR 5.65 billion, Abdul-Mu'een Al-Sheikh, chief of SEC’s Western Sector, said.
The renewable energy plants, which come as part of the Saudi Vision 2030, will have a combined capacity of 1,500 megawatt (MW).
SEC is also studying installation of solar cells in six sites across Makkah with a combined power capacity ranging between 90 MW and 130 MW.
Makkah subscribers accounted for 25 percent of the Kingdom’s total customers, with while the region’s peak power load represented 32 percent of the total load, Al-Sheikh added.
