Egypt court orders suspension of Uber, Careem services

Egypt suspended the operations of ride-share services Uber and Careem on Tuesday, following a court ruling on complaints filed by local taxi drivers, Bloomberg reported.

The suit was filed by drivers who claimed the US-based Uber and UAE-based Careem were violating traffic laws that barred the use of cars as taxis.

The Egyptian administrative court said the decision could be appealed.

Careem said that it had not been informed of the decision and that it was continuing its operations.

Meanwhile, Uber said it would appeal the decision, Reuters reported.

“We will do all we can to ensure millions of Egyptians can continue to enjoy the benefits of on-demand transportation,” an Uber official told Reuters.

“We are fully committed to working with the entire sector – including taxis – to improve mobility in Egypt together. We will appeal this decision, and continue to be available in Egypt in the meantime.”
