Saudi Arabia will back a joint bid by the US, Canada and Mexico to host soccer’s 2026 World Cup, Bloomberg TV reported.
“Morocco, the only other contender, solicited Riyadh’s support a month ago and by then ‘we had given our word to the Americans’,” Turki Al Alshikh, head of the Saudi Sports Authority, told the news channel.
“We balance issues, and in the end, we go with the interests of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” he added.
FIFA, the sport’s governing body, is to elect the host country on June 13.
The four-week 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia kicks off on June 14, with the inaugural match between the host country and Saudi Arabia.
