Qatar Airways may consider introducing a fuel surcharge on tickets to return to profitability, amid higher oil prices, chief executive Akbar al-Baker told Reuters on Monday.
The carrier incurred a loss of $70 million (QAR 252 million) in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2018, compared to a profit of $772 million (QAR 2.8 billion) in the previous year.
“We hope we will be able to move to profitability in the current financial year, even though the oil prices are rising,” said Baker.
Other carriers such as Cathay Pacific and Malaysia Airlines have said this year that they are adding a fuel surcharge to airfares as oil prices continue to increase.
