Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) have signed an amendment to the power purchase agreement (PPA) with the ACWA Power-led consortium for the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (MBR) Solar Park, the authority said in a statement.

The amendment includes adding 250 megawatts of photovoltaic solar panels at a cost of 2.4 cents per kilowatt hour. With this addition, the total capacity of the fourth phase of the solar park will rise 950 megawatts from 700 megawatts.

Following the amendment, the total investment for the project has reached AED 16 billion, the statement said.

The project will use three technologies to produce clean energy, including 600 megawatts from a parabolic basin complex, 100 megawatts from a solar tower and 250 megawatts from photovoltaic panels.

“We see this project being a unique model for large clean energy projects elsewhere in the world. This initiative also adds a new facet to our cooperation with two of our strongest partners, Saudi Arabia and China,”  Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said.

The fourth phase is the largest investment project in the world using Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) on a single site, and is based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.
