Nearly 80 percent of the world's largest technology companies are tweeting in Arabic to reach out to their target audience in the Middle East and North Africa, according to W7Worldwide, a marketing communications consultancy agency.

The list of major companies include Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Intel, Cisco, Oracle, HP, and Foxconn.

Every year December 18 is celebrated as the "Arabic Language Day" following a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1973.

According to the report, the Arabic language was placed second at 21 percent while English came first at 27 percent in terms of the frequency of usage on Twitter.

Spanish came in third at 16 percent followed by French and German at 11 percent.

Calling the high use of Arabic as a "positive" indicator, the consultancy said that 37.5 percent of the companies surveyed were directly targeting the Saudi market.

It advised companies that are targeting the Saudi market to start communicating with their target audience using Arabic, frame a strategic plan to manage the social media accounts and build a communications bridge in line with the ABC model.

The report also emphasized the importance of developing Arabic content creatively in order to be compatible with the local culture.
