Saudi Arabia is aiming to expand high-speed internet coverage in rural areas and towns by 2022, Al-Watan newspaper reported, citing Abdullah Al-Swaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

“Large cities are required to maintain above global average internet speed,” Al-Swaha said.

“The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is looking to expand high-speed internet coverage of higher than 10 megabytes per second (Mbps) across all rural areas by 2022,” he added.

Commenting on prices, Al-Swaha pointed out that government intervention with the pricing policy affects reliability and investor sentiment, noting that the Kingdom cannot force telecom operators into reducing rates.
