Saudi Arabia has announced the executive regulations for the new residency scheme, which will come into effect as of today, according to the official gazette Umm Al-Qura.

Under the new law, holders of such privileged residency are required to have a family status.

They can recruit domestic workers, and own property for residential, commercial and industrial purposes in all cities except for Makkah, Madinah and some border zones.

The residency holders can work in the private sector, own private transport means across the Kingdom, and obtain visit visas for relatives.

The new system will also offer freedom of movement without the need for an exit/re-entry visa and allow expats to use queues designated for Saudis at airports.

Expats are also allowed to practice commercial business, according to the foreign investment law.

Eligible residents should have a valid passport, adequate financial resources, and not be less than 21 years in age.

They must have no criminal records and obtain medical reports proving they suffer no contagious diseases.
