The Iranian people have the right to live in security and stability and to move towards development, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted on Sunday, quoting Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir.
“The Kingdom affirms that its hand is always extended for peace and seeks to achieve it, and believe that the peoples of the region, including the Iranian people, have the right to live in security and stability and to move towards development,” Al-Jubeir said in the tweet.
Speaking at a news conference, Al-Jubeir also stressed that “the Kingdom does not want a war in the region and does not seek to do so and will do its utmost to prevent this war,” nonetheless he confirmed that it will retaliate “firmly and decisively and will defend itself and its interests if the other side chooses war.”
Earlier, Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed regional developments, including efforts to strengthen security and stability, in a phone call with the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Saudi King Salman has also invited leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and Arab League countries for an urgent summit in Makkah amidst tension with Iran and geopolitical instability.
