Petrochemicals giant Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) reported a net profit after zakat and tax of SAR 3.41 billion for the first quarter of 2019, a 38.1 percent year-on-year (YoY) decrease on lower average selling prices.

When compared to the previous quarter, Q1 2019 net profit rose 5.2 percent due to lower selling, general and administrative expenses, lower other expenses, and higher profit share from associates and joint ventures.

 

This is despite the drop in average selling prices.

Total sales during the first quarter amounted to SAR 37.37 billion, a decrease of 7 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, and a decrease of 11 percent against the previous quarter.

 

“Though lower petrochemical prices negatively impacted SABIC’s first quarter results, we continued to deliver strong operational performance, including the highest quarterly sales volumes over the last four quarters,” Yousef Al-Benyan, SABIC vice chairman and CEO, said.
