Saudi Arabia's inflation rises to 2% in January

Saudi Arabia's inflation rose to 2% in January 2025, compared to the previous month, according to data from the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).
 
The cost-of-living index stood at 112.62 points last month as per the base year 2018, compared to 110.44 points in 2024.
 
Inflation is measured by the percentage change in the cost of living between the current and the year-ago periods. The increase or decline in inflation is measured compared to the previous month.

GASTAT attributed the rise in inflation primarily to an 8% year-on-year (YoY) increase in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels. Additionally, food and beverage prices increased by 0.8% YoY, while miscellaneous goods and services rose by 3.3% YoY.

 

Household furnishing and equipment prices fell 2.4% YoY, driven by a 4% decrease in furniture, carpets, and floor coverings prices.

The consumer price index (CPI) reflects changes in the prices consumers pay for a fixed basket of goods and services, which includes 490 items selected based on the 2018 expenditure and income survey results. Prices are collected through field visits to retail points of sale.

The Weight of Main Groups (%):

Monthly inflation increased in Makkah, Madinah, Taif, Tabuk, Najran, Al-Baha, and Sakaka. However, it declined in Riyadh, Dammam, Buraydah, and Jazan.

 

Meanwhile, inflation recorded a negative rate in Jeddah, Hofuf, Abha, Hail, and Arar.
