Dow Jones crosses 41,000 points first time in September

The US indices extended their gains on Thursday, fueled by a drop in August inflation in to its lowest level since February.

International Market

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6%, or 235 points, to settle at 41,096 points, its highest level since August 30 (41,563).

 

The S&P 500 index advanced 0.75%, or 41 points, to 5,595 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index also gained 1%, or 174 points, to 17,569 points.

 

As for European markets, the STOXX Europe 600 rose 0.8% to 512 points.

 

The German DAX index added 1% to 188 points, and The British FTSE index gained 0.55% to 8,240 points. The French CAC 40 index was also up 0.5% to 7,435 points.

 

The Nikkei index leapt 3.4%, or 1,213 points, to 36,833 points, and the broader Topix index added 2.45% to 2,592 points.

Brent crude futures for November delivery rose 1.9%, or $1.36, to $71.97 per barrel.

 

WTI crude for October delivery jumped 2.45%, or $1.66, at $68.97 per barrel.

 

Regarding gold, futures prices for December delivery were up 1.5%, or $38.2, to $2,580.60 per ounce.

 

Inflation in August dropped to 1.7% compared with 2.1% in July. Meanwhile, the initial claims for US unemployment benefits witnessed a modest hike of 2,000 to 230,000 applications in the week ended Sept. 7, data showed.
