POS weekly transactions up to SAR 12 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 12.02 billion in the week ended Aug. 19, compared to SAR 11.97 billion in the week before, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
The data showed that about 172.78 million transactions were processed during the week.
POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATMs and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

The increase was driven by a 196% surge in the education sector, in addition to a rise in POS transactions in the recreation and culture sector as well as the clothes and footwear sector by 9% and 3%, respectively.
On the other hand, all remaining sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week, led by the hotel sector, which fell 19%. It was followed by the restaurants and cafes and the telecommunications sectors, which saw a 10% drop each.
Consumer spending focused on food and beverages in the week, with nearly SAR 1.68 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes with SAR 1.64 billion.

Riyadh topped in POS transaction value, with nearly SAR 4.01 billion, or 33% of total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.72 billion, as indicated below:
