Shura Council asks GACA to study setting up domestic airport in Eastern Region

The Shura Council called on the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) to study the construction of a regional airport on a BOT basis (build, operate, transfer) serving the Northern Provinces of the Eastern Region (Al-Khafji, Al-Nairyah, and Qaryat al-Ulya) in cooperation with oil and industrial companies operating in the region and in coordination with other sectors.

The Council also approved, on Wednesday, a resolution that includes GACA’s confirmation to quickly complete all aspects of governance necessary to support the implementation of privatization programs on sound economic foundations and to support the future of the Kingdom's air transport industry, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The Council’s decision came after it heard a report that included the views of the Transport, Communications and Information Technology Committee on the observations and opinions of the council members on GACA’s annual report for FY2019 during its discussion at an earlier session.

The resolution also ensured that the Authority conducts a study to take advantage of airport land in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and national development, in compliance with the requirements of urban organizations.
